3M Patents

Background

Soon after completing my undergraduate degree, I worked at 3M Company where I gained industrial experience testing, developing and designing components for the manufacturing of abrasive products. During my 8 months at 3M I had two main projects.

Projects description

My main responsibility was to investigate novel manufacturing and design methods for cut-off wheels. To that end, I designed a device to mechanically place abrasive grits in cut-off wheels that led to a patent.

Another team project I participated in included researching 3D Printing for the production of abrasives. I investigated various printer settings, abrasive materials and shapes to help realize this project.

Reflection

These projects were further exposure to the importance of manufacturing knowledge for product design. Through investigating new production methods, we were able to achieve novel abrasive products.

During my time working at 3M, I learned how to work in an open-ended, research-focused work place. I felt alive in this fulfilling work environment where I could work creatively and manage my own time in the company of a diverse team.
